The Austin Wireless City Project is committed to the belief that
deploying a hotspot is good, but deploying a network is better.
In other words, we will only deploy networked hotspots so that
the community can benefit from the multiplicative benefits of
networked computing. That's a mouthful. Here's another way of
thinking about it: 5 stand-alone PCs are inferior to 5 PCs networked
together. This sort of thinking gave birth to office networks,
the Internet and the World Wide Web. And it's this of thinking
that drives the Austin Wireless City Project to deploy a network
of hotspots rather than just a bunch of stand-alone hotspots.
"Upgrading" stand-alone hotspots falls within the mission our
mission of improving the quality and availabiity of publicly-available
free wifi in Austin.
Already Hot? Get Hotter!
If a venue already has a stand-alone hotspot, we will provide
volunteer services to add it to the network and reassess the radio
coverage. As a networked hotspot, the venue will also be eligible
to receive the free services from a volunteer Network Caretaker
to monitor and respond to trouble with the hotspot.
