802.11 wireless card issues

  • Be sure your wireless card (PCMCIA or SD socket) is plugged in tightly to the correct slot. You should see a light on the card that indicates a signal lock.
  • Look for the SSID of the Hotspot in your wireless card's utility program (often an icon in the taskbar), or in Windows, go to Network Properties and try "Make New Connection".
  • You must have both a signal lock indicator on the card and a network connection using the SSID. If not, the problem lies with your device and its wireless card operation.
  • You must resolve these issues for your device before moving on to the next step.

TCP/IP configuration

  • In an MS DOS shell, try "ipconfig /all", "ipconfig /release", and then "ipconfig /renew"
  • Make sure DHCP is enabled to obtain IP address automatically.
  • Instead of a static DNS address, configure to obtain DNS automatically (dynamically).
  • If you must manually configure DNS servers:
  • Use 151.164.11.201 and 151.164.20.201 for SBC DSL backhauls.
  • Use 24.93.35.63 and 24.93.35.62 for Time Warner Road Runner backhauls.

SMTP configuration

  • If your SMTP outbound mail server is configured for the wrong network, then no mail will go out.
  • For SBC DSL backhaul connections, SMTP outbound mail server is smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com
  • For SBC DSL backhaul connections, an alternate server is mail.swbell.net
  • For Time Warner Road Runner service in Austin, the SMTP server is smtp-server.austin.rr.com
  • Or use the AWCP proxy server method: smtp.austinwirelesscity.org [coming 12/03]

Issues beyond your control that will require a caretaker visit

  • Dead access point (unlikely).
  • Bad wiring, power, or Ethernet cable.
  • Backhaul broadband connection to SBC, TW-RR, or other T-1/T-3 service is down or intermittent.
  • Authentication server down or unreachable at SBC, TW-RR, or LessNetworks.
  • Hotspot server down at venue.
